ENRG is dedicated to helping individuals make that first plunge into becoming self-employed. Over the years we’ve had many clients in all different sectors who have gone on to run successful businesses, both on Hull’s streets and online.
We’ve handpicked a group of these clients to tell us all about their experiences of setting up, running and ultimately growing a business. Here, we speak to the owner of Brambles gift shop in Hepworth’s Arcade, Kevin Jagger, about some of the challenges he’s faced so far and the benefits of operating his own store.
Tell us a little bit about your business.
We’re a new shop based in Hull’s beautiful Old Town. We pride ourselves on selling holistic products, gothic and pagan inspired gifts, natural stones and salt lamps, tarot cards, costume jewellery, cosmetics and much more. We have created a niche business and are rapidly building up a varied customer base.
What made you want to go into self-employment?
I was unable to continue my previous job as a corporate engineer on medical grounds. The decision to go self-employed was not only an exciting prospect, it also made financial sense and allows me to control my future.
What kind of support have you received from ENRG?
Early on I had support with my business plan and our company outlining stages. This was invaluable, as the process can be quite daunting and requires a lot of detail, insight and planning to get it right and achieve marketability.
What has been the most challenging thing you’ve experienced so far?
Taking the gamble to invest in myself, and working hard to develop as a business owner to achieve my set targets and goals. At the same time, this has been incredibly valuable in terms of both a business and an individual.
Describe one moment that sticks with you as being rewarding.
Reaching the stage where we’ve built up a strong customer base, and experiencing the power of word of mouth. We now have regular customers who come in just to give us birthday and Christmas cards to thank us for our good service, which is extremely fulfilling.
Tell us a little more about you. What do you do when you’re not at work?
I work just as hard at home! It’s amazing how motivational owning your own business can be, and if you put the work in you’ll reap rewards that you never thought possible.
What are you most looking forward to as your business progresses?
I’d love to achieve a good solid presence in the local community, and perhaps to expand the shop again by the time we reach year five. Hepworth Arcade is a wonderful place to do business and ENRG has played a huge role in Brambles establishing itself as part of the Victorian arcade’s retail offering.
